Waking up itchy or seeing small jumpers on your furniture or in your pet’s fur might mean there are fleas in your house. If you snuggle with your cat or dog at night, there is a good chance these insects have made it into your sleep space. Are you worried about possible fleas in your bed? This blog will go over the signs to look for, what to do if you’ve got an infestation, and how to make sure fleas do not return after getting rid of them. Read on to learn more!
Flea Bites on You
The first sign of fleas in your bed may not be on your mattress at all. These typically show up as small clusters of irritated, itchy, reddish dots around your shins, feet, or ankles. But if the insects are in your bed, you might see flea bites on any area of your skin that is exposed once you sleep.
Flea Dirt
One other thing you may notice is “flea dirt,” which is actually just flea feces. Since these small insects feed on the blood of other animals, the fecal matter is digested as their blood. Since fleas themselves are so tiny, this excrement appears as teensy black specks. But to the untrained eye, the fine flecks might just look like dirt. Flea dirt may turn a reddish-brown color if it gets wet.
Flea Eggs on the Mattress
With fleas in your bed, you may also see eggs scattered in the bed sheets or right on your mattress. These are very small, each about a half-millimeter in length, and also white in color. Flea eggs are typically described as looking like grains of salt or dandruff. So, if you have fleas at different points of their life cycle, you might notice a combination of what looks like salt and pepper.
Flea Larvae
We are sorry to tell you that you could find flea larvae in your bed, too. These are the eggs of the fleas after they’ve hatched. They are actually a lot bigger than the adult insects because they spin cocoons that blend in with your mattress. This means the larvae could be on your bedding or more hidden, like in the seams of your mattress.
Adult Fleas on Your Mattress
The most obvious sign of fleas in your mattress is adult fleas. Although they are tiny compared to other bugs or pests, you can’t miss their brownish-black and shiny bodies that make fleas easy to spot.
