Signs of Fleas in Your Mattress and How to Handle Them

Are you worried about fleas in your bed?

Waking up itchy or seeing small jumpers on your furniture or in your pet’s fur could mean there’s fleas in your house. If you snuggle with your cat or dog at night, there’s a chance these insects could have made it to your sleeping quarters. Are you worried about fleas in your bed? This blog will go over some of the signs to look out for, what to do if there’s an infestation, and how to make sure the fleas do not return after getting rid of them. Read on to learn more!

Flea Bites on Yourself

The first sign of fleas in your bed may not be in your bed at all, but on your body as bites. These typically show up as small clusters of itchy, irritated, red dots around the ankles, shins, or feet. If the insects are in your bed, you might see flea bites on any area of your skin that is exposed when you’re sleeping.

Flea Dirt

You may also notice “flea dirt,” which is really flea feces. Since these tiny bugs feed on the blood of other animals, the fecal matter is digested blood. Since the fleas themselves are so tiny, this excrement appears as small black specks. But to the untrained eye, the fine flecks might just look like dirt. Flea dirt may turn a reddish-brown color if it ever gets wet.

Flea Eggs in the Bed

With fleas in your bed, you may also see eggs scattered in your bed sheets or on your mattress. These are tiny, each about a half-millimeter in length, and white. Flea eggs are usually described as looking a lot like dandruff or grains of salt. So, if there are fleas at different points of their life cycle, you could notice a mix of what looks like tiny bits of salt and pepper.

Wash Your Bedding with Hot Water

Strip your bed and wash all the bedding in hot water, then tumble-dry it on high heat. The high temperature should kill existing eggs, larvae, and fleas, and the water should wash them all away. What’s left might collect in your dryer’s lint filler, so make sure to clean that out afterwards.

Steam-Clean Your Mattress

You may also want to steam-clean your entire mattress. The heat from the steam could penetrate deep into the mattress layers to clean flea dirt, kill the adult fleas, and destroy hidden eggs or larvae. Knowing how to do this properly will help you keep it fresh and prevent future problems.
