How can you know when it’s time to let your child sleep with a pillow?
Introducing a pillow is a serious step in your toddler’s sleep journey. For safety reasons, you should not place a pillow in your child’s crib until at least after age one, and possibly not until they are closer to two. Beyond that, how can you know when it’s time to let your child sleep with a pillow? Although there is no set age that works for every child, you can look out for specific signs that your toddler may require a pillow. This will help you figure out if your little one is prepared for added comfort and support at night. Read on to learn more!
They Are Now Sleeping in a Toddler Bed or Big-Kid Bed
Moving out of a crib can be a first sign of readiness for a pillow. At this point, toddlers have the head control and neck strength necessary to use a pillow safely. A few children start sleeping in a toddler bed as early as 18 months. However, it is usually later, sometimes not until around age three or three and a half, due to safety benefits and the need for peace of mind, ensuring that your child stays in bed until you get to them. As long as your child is not trying to climb out of the crib, which does pose a risk of serious injury from a fall, there might be no need to transition them into a toddler bed. A few experts suggest that children can safely sleep in their cribs until they reach a height of 35 inches, which provides them with a significantly better chance of climbing out with the crib mattress at the lowest setting. A few children bypass the toddler bed entirely. Once they grow out of the crib, they may just switch into a twin mattress, but it does depend on age, readiness, bedroom setup, space that is available, and a few other factors.
They’re Uncomfortable or Restless During Sleep
Sleep regressions can keep happening beyond the stage of infancy. It is not uncommon for two-year-olds to stop sleeping soundly. A sleep regression should be temporary, but if your child is waking up a lot during the night, it can be a combination of their growing body and body making them less physically comfortable in bed or a real sense of independence provoking rebellion against rest. A more comfortable bed setup can definitely help. A pillow can make things cozier while also offering head support. The elevation could be great for stuffy noses as well, helping drain congestion so your kid can breathe easier.
Their Sleeping Position is Different
People who sleep on their sides truly benefit from neck support, even younger children. Once past the infant stage, a lot of kids will start side sleeping, But again, each kid is different, and some might never sleep on their sides. If your toddler is shifting positions trying to get comfortable, then a new pillow will make all the difference.
