What to Do About Your Yellow Pillows

What to Do About Your Yellow Pillows

You might be wondering why you have yellow pillows.

Regularly cleaning your pillow and bed linens can help them last longer and maintain a healthy sleeping environment. Still, discoloration can happen a lot, usually in the form of yellow stains. Luckily, there are a lot of ways to remove these stains and prevent yellowing from happening in the first place. So, why do your pillows turn yellow?  We will go over all of the possible reasons and a few solutions to this issue. Read on to learn more!

Science Behind Yellow Pillow Staining

Yellowing is typically a result of moisture oxidation, which is a chemical reaction that occurs when a substance is exposed to air. The moisture could be anything, like sweat, skincare products, natural oils from your skin, sebum, saliva, excess humidity, spilled liquid, or going to bed with wet hair. Moisture brings in proteins, salts, and oils into the pillow, and then exposure to air dries out the dampness. Once it’s dried, the oxidizing effect may discolor the fabric cover or fill materials. This discoloration will usually show up as yellow or golden brown stains. There are many ways to clean and get rid of your yellow pillows, which are the following:

Machine-Washing

Check which components of your pillows are machine washable and always follow the care instructions from the manufacturer. A lot of memory foam pillows aren’t machine washable, and only the covers of pillows are washable. Remove or separate these pieces and put them into a washing machine to prevent allergens from building up and then seeping into your pillow.

Baking Soda Plus Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar could be a potent combination against pillows turning yellow. Mix equal parts baking soda and clean water to help create a paste. Use this paste to help pre-treat your pillows, applying it to all of the stains and letting it sit for about 30 minutes. Then saturate a clean cloth with distilled white vinegar and use that to help blot the marks before you toss the pillow covering or insert it in the washing machine.

Hydrogen Peroxide

You could also combine equal parts hydrogen peroxide and warm water to make a gentle bleaching solution that helps keep your pillows looking fresh. Pour the solution into a bottle and spray it evenly onto the yellow stains, taking care not to make the pillow too wet. Let it sit for about an hour near an open window or in another clean area with direct sunlight. The combination of UV light with the hydrogen peroxide could have a brightening effect on the fabrics and other materials.
