How Stress and Sleeping Affect Each Other

Stress can live in your subconscious and manifest itself in physical ways, especially while you’re sleeping.

Let’s talk about sleeping and stress. Stress has a very unique way of sneaking into each aspect of your life. When you are stressed, it affects you both physically and mentally – even if you do not realize it. Stress can live in your subconscious and manifest itself in physical ways, especially while you’re sleeping. This is troubling because if you do not sleep well, you won’t get all the benefits of sleep, which will leave you feeling sluggish and groggy. It is also discouraging since it starts a cycle. The more stressed out you are, the less sleep you’ll get. Read on to learn how stress and sleeping affect each other!

Sleeping and Stress: The Facts

According to a survey published by the American Psychological Association: adults here in the USA report sleeping on average of 6.7 hours each night, which is less than the minimum recommendation of seven to nine total hours. Also, 42% report stress has caused them to lie awake at night in the past month. Many adults also say their stress increases when the length or quality of their sleep decreases. When they don’t get enough sleep, 21% of adults say they feel stressed. Adults with higher stress levels feel bad and do not get quality sleep during the night.

Tips for Reduced Stress and Improved Sleep

Try to exercise regularly to improve your stress. Did you know that exercise is a completely natural stress reliever? It is a healthy and easy way to work off steam, and it will only help your health in the long term, both mentally and physically.

Try avoiding electronics for at least an hour before your head hits the pillow. If you are used to watching television or playing on your phone before you go to sleep, stop doing so. Your brain does not need all that stimulation while you are trying to fall asleep. Turn everything off and be prepared to recharge in peace.

Avoid Caffeine and Naps

Avoid any caffeinated drinks as much as you can during the day, including coffee, soda, and tea. Your caffeine intake throughout the day might be keeping you awake at night. Try to cut back as much as you can, especially after five o’clock.

Also, if you can, try to avoid taking naps throughout the day. A sleep schedule is crucial, and you will not be doing yourself any favors if you break that schedule. If you feel the need to take a nap, try to get up and do something physical. Anything to occupy yourself from laying on your mattress will help.
