Are Your Pillows Changing the Way You Sleep?

Pillows

Pillows can completely alter your sleep schedule. What do you need to know about them?

There are few things in life as wonderful as a comfortable, warm bed and a restful night’s sleep. But for many of us, that restful night of sleep is elusive and it is hard to put a finger on exactly why. Most people assume it is their mattress, but another possible explanation that might surprise you is your pillow. Pillows that are too hard, too soft, or just generally uncomfortable could be resulting in restless nights for you. There are multiple factors that go into choosing the right pillow for you, but once you find it, you may find that you have a better quality of sleep each night.

What’s in That Pillow?

There are many pillow fillings on the market to choose from, and the one you have may or may not be the best for you. Some of the available options include down (feathers), wool, cotton, memory foam, and latex, and they have different characteristics. Down, while the most classic choice, is soft and breathable but is also the least durable in the long run. It is also not a good choice for most people with allergies.  Wool, cotton, and latex are all hypoallergenic options, resistant to dust mites and mold. Latex is the firmest option, but it is also responsive to pressure. If you need a firm pillow, this could be a good bet for you. Finally, memory foam is firm, but also molds to the shape of your head and neck. These tend to be very supportive pillows, but they don’t work as well if you move around a lot in your sleep (since it won’t mold to a single position).

How Thick Is It?

The thickness of the pillow will also determine how well you sleep on it. Sleeping on a pillow that is not the right size for you can result in neck and shoulder tension, back pain, and headaches. Different sleep positions are better suited to different pillow thicknesses. The purpose of a pillow is to keep your spine aligned while you sleep. So if you sleep on your stomach, a flat, soft pillow is best. If you sleep on your side, you will need a thick pillow that elevates your head so your spine stays straight. Finally, if you sleep on your back, you should use a medium thickness pillow that elevates your head without pushing it forward.
