What Can You Do to Develop a Healthy Sleep Schedule?

Sleep schedule

Maintaining a quality sleep schedule is a key part of sleep health as a whole.

Humans can’t function without sleep. Try as we might to push ourselves and squeeze every moment that we can out of every day, eventually we have to devote some of those moments to sleeping. Without it, we won’t be able to focus or perform at our very best. One way to make sure that you are getting enough quality sleep each night is to put yourself on a sleep schedule. Sometimes, however, this is much easier said than done, so here are some helpful tips for getting on to a sleep schedule.

Schedule Is The Key Word

The first thing to do when trying to develop a good sleep schedule is to set times that you can and will stick to. This means that you need to develop a habit of going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time each morning. This doesn’t just mean work days either – a solid sleep schedule also applies to the weekends or your days off. When you stay up very late on your days or nights off, then sleep-in late the next morning, you will throw off your whole schedule and undo all your hard work.

Create a Bedtime Routine

One way to stick to the schedule you set is to develop a bedtime routine or ritual that you do every night. This could be one big thing or a series of smaller tasks that you complete before you hit the sheets. Some examples include setting up the coffee pot for the next morning, brushing your teeth, doing some yoga, taking a shower, and picking out your clothes for the next day. The purpose of the routine is to help you wind down and release stress so that you fall asleep faster. Try not to have your bedtime routine include screen time,  since the blue light can contribute to you having trouble falling asleep.

Try Some Exercise

Going to bed at the same time every day doesn’t mean much if you lay in bed for hours unable to fall asleep. For most people, stress and anxiety is one of the leading things that keep them from falling asleep. Your bedtime routine is one way to combat this stress, and exercise is another. Exercising is a great way to relieve stress, and most people find that they sleep better on days that they have exercised.
