How to Sleep Better While Traveling

There are ways to sleep better even when you’re traveling.

Being away from home has plenty to offer but one area that’s always uncertain is how you’ll sleep. It can be difficult to get a good night of rest when you’re away from your bed and everything else you’re accustomed to when you normally go to bed. However, there are ways to sleep better even when you’re traveling. You certainly don’t want to feel exhausted while on a vacation or important work trip. Instead, use these sleep tips to get better rest even when you’re in an unfamiliar place.

Bring Comfort With You

Have a favorite pillow, pillow case, blanket, stuffed animal, night light, whatever helps you sleep at night? Bring it with you. It can offer some sense of comfort and remind you of home, no matter how far away you are. Pack whatever you can take with you that will give you a sense of comfort when it’s time to go to sleep.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol

Travel can be exhausting, particularly if you’re switching timezones or are on a business trip. It may be tempting to reach for a cup (or two or three) of coffee to help you stay awake. Just remember that all that caffeine can make it much harder to fall asleep at night.

Likewise, alcohol can have an impact on how you sleep, too. A few glasses of wine might be tempting but if you’re already having trouble sleeping, alcohol consumption will only contribute to that and may end up leaving you feeling tired in the morning.

Figure Out Light

Light from beneath a door or the sun peeking through your curtains can both end up disrupting your sleep. When settling into any bed away from home, make sure all blinds and curtains are completely shut, without any gaps, before you head to bed. Turn off all of the lights and see if there’s any disruptive light still present. You may need to block lights out with spare towels or blankets. If you’re extra light-sensitive, you may want to bring an eye mask with you so you can get great sleep at any time. Bonus points for it being useful on a plane too!

Block Noise

All kinds of strange noises happen at hotels. People coming in and out, doors shutting, elevators moving, and more. Those ambient noises can be distracting. Some travelers make use of earplugs when they sleep, though keep in mind this could be a fire hazard and do so at your own risk. Getting a room on a higher floor might help. If you’re sensitive to noise, use a white noise app on your phone or bring a white noise machine with you whenever you travel.
