How to Purchase a Mattress for a Child

Mattress

The right mattress can make a huge difference in how your child sleeps.

Children need a lot more sleep than adults do–in fact, some children need between 10 and 14 hours of sleep a night depending on how old they are. Their bodies and minds are both growing and must recharge from their days, process their new skills, and refresh their mood. Like adults, children can also get back pain from their mattress. Having a quality mattress is important for a growing child so let’s take a look.

The Right Support

Look for a bed with the right support for a child. Children are dealing with softer bones and stretchy muscles that must recover quickly. You’ll want to look for a mattress that the child feels comfortable on, so much like when you lay on mattresses while shopping, you should also let your child lay on them to decide for themselves whether or not it’s comfortable.

When in Doubt, Go Bigger

You may be able to save some money with a twin sized mattress, but a full or queen will allow some growing room for when they get bigger. Plus, it’ll keep them from ever falling off. Kids tend to keep their mattresses for far longer than adults do–even up to 10 years, so you’ll want something large enough to last them.

Opt for Plush

Children aren’t heavy enough to compress down big pillow tops, whereas firm beds may be too much for their softer bones. Plush beds usually offer the perfect balance of support. Again, you’ll want them to test the bed themselves, as plush works for most children but it isn’t for everyone.
